남아선호사상에 정면으로 문제를 제기한 최초의 드라마이다. 더불어 남아선호사상과 가부장제하에서 직접적으로 차별받는 여성뿐 아니라 남자다움을 강요받는 남성도 결국 피해자라는 사실을 보여주려 했다고. 이 의도는 부모의 지나친 관심과 기대에 부응하지 못하는 귀남의 고민과 방황에서 드러난다고 볼 수 있었으며, 당시 60%에 육박하는 높은 시청율과 함께 많은 이들에게 공감을 불러 일으켰다.
당초 50부작으로 기획됐지만 인기에 힘입어 64부작으로 연장되었는데 그 이후 스토리의 긴장감이 조금 떨어지며 잠시 주춤하기도 했지만 후남이 소설가로 성공하고 가족들과 화해하는 감동적인 결말에 이르러 다시 60%대로 시청률이 상승했다.

한국 트렌디 드라마의 시초로 불리는 드라마로 그 이전까지 미니시리즈들이 소설을 원작으로 한 작품들이 많았지만 이후로 로맨스물이 주류를 이루게 되었습니다.
오래되고 진부한 질문인 ‘남녀 친구 사이에 과연 사랑은 가능한가’라는 소재로 하여 젊은이들의 풋풋한 사랑과 우정을 그리면서, 세 남녀의 얽히고설킨 관계 속에서 서서히 사랑을 확인해가는 친구가 연인으로 발전해 가는 이야기를 설득력 있게 그려 시청자의 사랑을 많이 받았다
